What we're about

Lean2Rescue is a group of campers, hikers, hunters, skiers, paddlers, outdoor enthusiasts and simple suckers for punishment who rehabilitate lean-to shelters in the Adirondack Park.

Since 2004, we've worked on over 30 lean-tos in St. Lawrence, Herkimer and Hamilton Counties in Upstate New York. While we have focused primarily on the Western edge of the Adirondacks, we would love to hear from individuals looking for support in improving conditions across the Adirondack Park.

Queer Lake Lean-to: Old and New

Queer Lake Lean-to: Old and New

This shows the left side of the deacon's seat as it was prior to be being rescued. On the right, it's pretty easy to discern the three new logs.

When the weather warmed sufficiently that liquids wouldn't freeze, all the new logs and lumber were slathered liberaly with a fresh coat of stain, along with the rest of the lean-to.

Mother Nature isn't kind to lean-tos. She throws everything she has at them, rain, ice, scorching sun, and months of deep snow.

Single day hike.

The old shingles were just scraped off. They're now bundled and sitting inside the lean-to, waiting for the day when they'll get a ride out.

Before leaving, the roof will have a tarp temporarily secured down to prevent leaks. This measure is only until the real rescue is mounted, at a later date.

Big Shallow Lean-to: May 7, 2007

Saturday, May 7th, 2007.

Yes, this scene does look rather relaxed.

What you don't see are all the old roof shingles from the Big and Little Shallow lean-tos, the buckets filled with all manner of tools and screws and nails, several shovels, some pry bars, a few hydraulic jacks, etc. A steady stream of human pack mules had already moved all that stuff back to the waiting armada of canoes beached near the Five Ponds outlet, a mile and half away.

Somehow, the fascia didn't make it out to the Chub Pond lean-to when the logs did, in October of '08. Not pointing any fingers or anything, just saying...

Anyhow. Two rescuers (without a camera) brought in a fascia kit the weekend prior to this, but didn't install it. That conveniently left a decent reason to return. Shhh, don't tell any spouses about "conveniently" not installing the fascia.

Beautiful weekend to be there!

The fascia still could use some stain. That just means there'll have to be a return trip in the future. ;-)

Got to get in a quick "shout out" to the younger folks of Lean2Rescue.

This is Kaleb C. at the Andys Creek lean-to on a recon trip. This picture of the lean-to (and young Mr. C.) is pre-rescue.

Kaleb spent the day keeping a couple of adult rescuers in line and motivated. Thanks for your support Mr. C!

Sand Lake Falls Lean-to: September 6, 2008

Somewhere along the trail to Sand Lake Falls. Sitting on and looking at a load that's upwards of a ton. Wondering just how it's going to get the rest of the way out to the lean-to.

It got there. Eventually. The crew had absolutely nothing left in the way of horsepower after getting it there, though. There'll be no repairs this weekend.

So, we did the next best thing. We sat in the falls, drank a number of medicinal beers, and let the falling water wash away all the stink and soreness.

Out with the old and rotted, and in with the new. All tolled there were 24 full logs, or log sections, replaced. That's a record nobody hopes to ever break.

Less than an hour after this picture was taken this wall was complete, save for stain. The rescuers that hiked in the following day finished up the staining after the rain eventually stopped.

As for materials deliveries, this lean-to was the toughest of them all, both on carts and cartilage. Lots of both were destroyed along the trail out there.

Sand Lake Falls Lean-to: July 19, 2008

This was a day hike to put a temporary tarp on the roof of this lean-to until a proper rescue could be mounted. It was in bad shape, only making everything else worse as it leaked.

Note to self: Deer flies are particulary vicious in July!

Middle Settlement Lean-to: Feb 16 - 17, 2008

... As promised to the two campers we awoke this cold morning, sleeping in the lean-to, "We'll have a new roof on by tonight." This is the new roof. Promise kept.

Along with a new roof, a couple beers and some grilled bratwurst were passed along to our new friends as peace offerings. They took the bait.
